Zero-hours contract workers turned away by some of UK’s biggest landlords http://gu.com/p/43vjb/stw
A 40 hour minimum wage job pays about £235 pw, after tax.
Average rent in the country £800+ pm
Average rates in the country £100+ pm
So that leaves roughly £100 pm to pay utilities, buy food, pay for transport, stay groomed and buy clothes for work.
That is if you can get 40 hours.
Perhaps someone has better figures than this out there. If so, I would be interested.
In the meantime have a look at this article where minimum wage workers tell their stories.
