This is how you lose your house.
A new tenant moves in. Shortly after someone presenting themselves as representing authority comes to speak to you. They tell you that your new tenant is a dangerous criminal and ask for your cooperation in placing surveillance. They ask if they can send their own tenants into the house – to keep an eye on him/her. That does not seem unreasonable so you agree.
The person they send is the noise pest from hell. In due course your other long-standing tenants move out. They send other tenants. Drugs are posted to your address and the police investigate. It appears that some of your new tenants are prostitutes. You suspect there is welfare fraud going on too.
You speak to your authority and ask what is going on? Why haven’t they arrested the original tenant yet? The tenants you sent are causing a lot of trouble and you are getting complaints.
The authority now changes tack. They explain about the assets forfeiture law, that you knowingly allowed criminals to operate from your premises, and they can seize your house.
But they don’t tell you that they lied about the original tenant who is not a criminal, just an ordinary Joe Public.
With the threat of asset forfeiture hanging over you, you cooperate with everything they ask, while they bleed you dry. And of course you can’t tell anyone what has happened – you have signed a non-disclosure agreement, which if you break will land you in jail.
