Janus, Roman god, was a good guy. January is named after him. One face looks back at the old year. The other looks forward to the new.
How the guilty make the innocent look guilty
It happens a lot, but because we think in boxes, we don’t realise it.
Box 1. Children
Children, little angels that they are freshly arrived from heaven, oddly need to be taught good behaviour with mind-numbing repetition, but are geniuses at being horrible without any coaching. Nobody teaches a child how to be petty, unforgiving, spiteful, petty, pointlessly destructive and wantonly violent and cruel to other children and any living thing smaller than themselves – it comes naturally.
In the bad old days when adults thought it was their role to control children and teach them the right way to behave, and prevent obnoxious behaviour, children bullied other children. It just didn’t occur at the epidemic proportions which we now see. Yes, society is to blame – you can’t blame the children for adults abandoning their responsibilities.
Accordingly, there can be few of us who as children did not witness at least one bullying event. In the old days it was more often one on one or two on one, but these days in the almost complete absence of adult control, our lucky, non-adult-monitored children will most often experience mob-on-one.
The scene is recognisable. Bullies pick on the arbitrarily chosen victim. They seek to engage their victim. Victim tries to avoid. Bullies prevent avoidance. Bullies engage in verbal, physical, hyping up the emotion, throwing in nasty surprises until the victim lashes out, screams, cries, throws a wobbly – all met with hysterical laughter by the bullies, who then turn to the onlookers with – see, we told you he/she was a nutter/weird/cry-baby/whatever. At this point a figure of authority might belatedly appear, and the now rationally behaving bullies will put on their innocent act, and claim passionately that the victim attacked them.
This is children. No-one taught them this. Make an unprovoked attack, then blame the victim for attacking you. And, very often, getting away with it.
Box 2. Battered Wives
The dual-personality of the wife-batterer, has a long history. A respectable seeming man, who is very nice to everyone – except his wife, whom he toys with physically, emotionally and mentally in private. Nobody believes her when she tries to tell people what he is really like. That is a side of him that only she, and the children see. Wife-battering, which includes psychological torture has been public knowledge for – no, not centuries, thousands of years, but each individual wife who claims it, is not believed. And if the wife complains, the abuser will counter claim that nobody knows what he has to put up with, his wife is insane. He is the one with status and credibility and is believed.
Box 3. Institutional Abusers of Children
Much the same problem for battered wives, of the two-faced attacker. We know paedophiles exist. We also know that children lie. The adult has status, the child hasn’t, and I suppose the abuser has the sense to only target lower class and vulnerable children, not the children of the local judge or policeman. Further, the abuser is embedded in an institution which in its own self-interest provides him with protective cover – a church, a school, a children’s home, or an ethnic community, to mention a few venues. The abuser hides behind his position and appearance of respectability. What chance has the child got. The child sees a completely different face to the rest of the world. And if the adult is telling the truth, the child has to be made out to be a liar, and perverted, no innocent.
Box4. Children as a Weapon Against Adults
The next variation is a peculiar development of our time. Now that paedophilia has been recognised as a problem, non-paedophiles now find themselves in the firing line when children/people use children on a false charge. The public feels strongly about this issue, and so they should. But this is not being reflected in a sensible response from the relevant authorities. The solution to the problem of paedophilia is not to go from believing that every child is a liar, to believing that every child is telling the truth. It is a very serious matter for all concerned, and the correct response is a proper, thorough, objective investigation to uncover the facts, which must include determining which of the two parties are lying. Also, where it is clear that the child has made the false allegation because an adult put them up to it, surely that adult deserves an investigation for child abuse.
Box 5. Rapists
The lies of rapists have been very effective at getting them off the hook. The conviction rate is derisory, and few victims see the point of facing psychological rape in court, while every aspect of their life is trawled over and exposed to public view, when their attacker is exempt from the same process.
The get-offs of the rapist follow a standard script, principally she consented. But often throw in helpful allusions to the effect the woman was a whore/sex pervert/nymphomaniac anyway, so what does it matter.
There is a further disincentive in complaining of rape. Recently there has been a trend where the rapist had been acquitted for the woman to be convicted of perjury and jailed. This is the perfect result for the attacker. Now the victim has a criminal record. Who said Sharia law had not come to Britain?
Box 6. Institutional Abusers Against Adults
The notorious case in Ireland was the Magdalene laundries. Make one “mistake” though oddly it takes two people to make a “mistake” and the men weren’t put in the laundries, but that’s patriarchy for you – punish the woman for the man’s crimes. State and church supported slavery for the crime of being a normal woman. The last Magdalene laundry closed in 1996, and if you think Ireland’s cultural attitudes have moved on from there, you are dreaming. (Remember the Indian lady who died in an Irish hospital because the medical staff refused to remove a foetus – which was already dead?) Women were punished, imprisoned without crime, the men walked off scot-free, the church got a free supply of labour for a horrible job, and the state, the law and society at large turned a blind eye. But then the State, the Church, the Legal establishment, and men are all respectable. They all have status. Women are just there to reproduce people, be the whipping boys, and do the drudgery. (Love you Ireland, not. Note. I was born there.)
But, we seem to be living in the age of institutional abuse against adults. There are so many examples now it is difficult to know where to start. Social Workers leaving abused children with families, while taking loved and properly cared for children from non-abusive families. (Where they often end up in care, where they are abused). Police, court and legal profession corruption. Social Workers hi-jacking elderly into nursing homes, where for swingeing fees they are abused and neglected, and desperate families are convicted of kidnapping in secret family courts when they try to take them home to look after them. The elderly neglected, left to die in hospitals without appropriate medical and nursing care, put on the Liverpool Care Pathway without anybody’s knowledge or consent, and when challenged by the relatives, deny, engage in cover-ups, impose gagging clauses, and blame the relatives. Disability claimants treated as frauds, when it is the institution denying them payment of their entitlement, which is practising fraud. The government creating unemployment, then blaming the unemployed for it. Creating an affordable housing shortage then criminalising homelessness. The government retaliating against (first) Gulf War veterans, when they simply tried to obtain what they were entitled to as a result of Gulf War Syndrome, caused by the multiple, and some not fully tested, vaccinations they were forced to receive. www.targeted-individuals.com Local Councils using terrorist legislation to spy on residents for minor civil infractions. Members of the public black-listed for complaining. Etcetera.
The pattern followed is the same. We – the Authority (fill in the blank here) have status, power and respectability. You, on the other hand are nobody. How dare you challenge us. Wait a bit, isn’t it also true that you are an obsessive-compulsive complainer/delusional/criminal/abusive/mentally-unbalanced/ and anything else they can think of – all unsubstantiated, while your complaints against them are factual.
Two-faced. They pretend they are providing a beneficial service, but when they do something else and you draw attention to it, they make out there is something wrong about you. They are at fault. You are the victim. You get the blame. The guilty make the innocent look guilty to cover their tracks.
Box 7. Workplace Bullying
Workplace bullying can be from a boss, work colleague/s, or both. Everyone knows it happens, but it still happens. It is a very fundamental life sabotage. We might enjoy our work, but unless you are one of the one percent, you also have to work to keep a roof over your head. So, naturally you invest a lot in your career. Good jobs, with decent pay and conditions and promotion prospects are in short supply. It is too easy for someone/s acting on an arbitrary basis to sabotage your work, spread lies and harass you to the extent that doing your job becomes impossible.
Sometimes bullying is obvious. That at least gives the victim a chance to defend themselves. But the most insidious form is the two-faced boss, who acts normal to everyone except his target in private, even talking the victim up to other people, gaslighting behaviour that discredits the victim when he complains. This type of bullying is invisible to everyone except the victim and very difficult to prove.
Box 8. Neighbour Harassment
You have the neighbours from hell who are noise pests, vandals, thieves, and keep very unsavoury company, which now you have to put up with. When you complain your landlord/letting agent/estate agent smiles and does nothing. When it gets back to the neighbours that you complained about them, and it always does, they complain about you, and suddenly you are the troublemaker
Box 9. Criminals or Police or Both Fabricating Evidence
Criminals/police committing crimes then fitting up an innocent party to cover their tracks. A conviction ends an investigation which helps the criminals get away with it. Typical fall guys are lower class, perhaps low intelligence or belonging to any marginal group. Anyone who does not have the resources to defend themselves.
The financial trashing of Kevin Taylor, an honest self-made businessman by the police. They tried to fit him up too, but failed. But the process of defending himself reduced him from millionaire to nothing. The Stalker Affair.
Box 10. Spies
Similar to Box 8, spies fabricating evidence of a non-existent crime so that they can obtain compliance by threatening their target with prison.
The same formula is used in all these circumstances, from the simple, childhood bullies, to the sophisticated police, white collar crime and espionage. In order for the guilty to escape consequences for their acts an innocent person must be made to take the blame. The innocent must be made to look guilty.
Petition against corruption.
