Don’t say we didn’t warn you about this one: your “smart” TV may be spying on you. Really.
According to classified documents leaked this week, the CIA found a way to hack the microphone on televisions equipped with voice control and send the audio back to headquarters. It can even record in “Fake-Off” mode – when the TV looks like it’s off but isn’t, according to notes on project “Weeping Angel.”
See, this is why we can’t have nice things.

Ghandi’s “Swadeshi”, or local self-sufficiency, seems to be a philosophy that supports liberal ideals. If specialist Hospitals are seen as a form of “mass production” then the local District General Hospital (DGH) represents the “local artisans” as described by Satish Kumar. (and in The economics of performance – chapter 35, p 418 in “The Case Against the Global Economy”). The problem is the increased mortality and morbidity associated with rural DGHs for complex problems at the edge of technology. There is a choice between having services locally, but with poorer results, or having them centrally with better results, but problems of transportation, inconvenience and access. Why not involve patients in this debate? After all, we consulted citizens on the complexity of the EU….
…Central to Gandhi’s philosophy was the principle of ‘Swadeshi’, which, in effect, means local self-sufficiency. Satish Kumar elaborates on this important concept. Kumar is a Gandhian…

Tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were forced to work for $1 day, or for nothing at all — a violation of federal anti-slavery laws — a lawsuit claims.
The lawsuit, filed in 2014 against one of the largest private prison companies in the country, reached class-action status this week after a federal judge’s ruling. That means the case could involve as many as 60,000 immigrants who have been detained.
It’s the first time a class-action lawsuit accusing a private U.S. prison company of forced labor has been allowed to move forward.
The last 36 hours have seen major developments in the Middle East in defiance of directives issued by British and US-led Coalition forces. Turkish militias are attacking anti-Daesh (Isis/Isil) units near the Syrian city of Manbij. And at the same time, Turkish-backed forces have launched an attack on the long-suffering Yazidi community.

The ‘punks and crazies’ of Greenham
Friday 3rd March 2017
WHAT did the CIA think about the women’s peace camp at Greenham Common?
This January the CIA made thousands of formerly secret papers available via its website. Some answer this question.
In short, the CIA knew the Greenham protesters had a big effect but they also thought they were “punks and crazies” who freaked out the intelligence men. The CIA documents are generally “secret” analysis reports rather than records of actual CIA operations.
The ones we’re concerned with here cover the “new cold war” of the 1980s. In 1983 president Ronald Reagan’s…

The ruling corporate elites no longer seek to build. They seek to destroy. They are agents of death. They crave the unimpeded power to cannibalize the country and pollute and degrade the ecosystem to feed an insatiable lust for wealth, power and hedonism. Wars and military “virtues” are celebrated. Intelligence, empathy and the common good are banished. Culture is degraded to patriotic kitsch. Education is designed only to instill technical proficiency to serve the poisonous engine of corporate capitalism. Historical amnesia shuts us off from the past, the present and the future. Those branded as unproductive or redundant are discarded and left to struggle in poverty or locked away in cages. State repression is indiscriminant and brutal. And, presiding over the tawdry Grand Guignol is a deranged ringmaster tweeting absurdities from the White House.

Inventor of the World Wide Web Sir Tim Berners-Lee has pointed to the spread of “fake news” as one of three challenges stopping his creation from being “a tool which serves all of humanity”.
The exchange of personal data for free content and a lack of transparency around political advertising were also highlighted as areas of concern for the computer scientist.
In an open letter on the 28th anniversary of his original proposal for the World Wide Web, Berners-Lee set out a five-year plan to tackle these three “complex problems”.
A new app gives college students the option to only report a sexual assault if someone else is raped by the same person.
by OLGA KHAZAN
One in five women who attended college during the past four years say they were sexually assaulted, according to a Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation poll published this summer, but only 11 percent told police or college authorities.
The reasons for the underreporting vary, but there seem to be four main pitfalls: Victims don’t want to draw attention to themselves or their assailants, don’t know if the incident truly constituted “rape,” are worried they won’t be believed, or don’t know whom to report to.
A new site, Callisto, aims to make it easier for college students to document—and report, if they wish—their sexual assaults. With Callisto, a student can fill out a timestamped record of the incident and then choose…
