A Word in Your Ear

Freedom was protected in the Anglo-Saxon Western nations (not European which operated on a different system) by the principle – if it is not against the law, it is within the law.

That freedom is being whittled away. Our governments on many fronts are introducing the alternative principle that no act is legal unless specifically permitted by the state, and even where acts are permitted it is dictated how those acts should be carried out.

Every authority now seeks to micro-manage every aspect of our lives, and acts as if they are entitled to do so. Expressing a contrary opinion is sufficient these days to get a visit from the police and to have your career terminated. Citizens are informally enlisted to snoop on and meddle with their neighbours. Teachers encourage children to monitor their parents behaviours and values.
