The issue of migration is always on the news and is always contentious – yet, short of dramatic disasters such as the deaths of the Chinese cockle pickers in Britain, the issue of exploitation of migrants is largely ignored. Why? Because it would amount to an admission that a strong motivation behind large-scale and largely unsupervised migration is in order to maximise profits by exploiting labour? But what is the explanation for the general silence and indifference of Trades Unions?
